International vaccine organisation Gavi has announced the creation of a billion-dollar fund to subsidise the production of vaccines in Africa.
African countries currently import around 99% of their vaccine requirements. The African Union wants the continent to produce 60% of the vaccines it needs by 2040.
Gavi said the fund, which will be officially launched in June, is aimed at helping ensure African countries are prepared to respond to future health emergencies.
